Week of Nov. 1

Happy November!  6th Grade is very excited about our Fall Festival!  It will be this Thursday, November 4 from 5pm to 7:30pm.  There will be games and food!  This year, both 6th grade homerooms are responsible for the concession stand.  Mrs. Allen and I will need lots of volunteers! Please consider giving 20-30 minutes of your time to help our students.  Thanks!

Mrs. Allen's Social Studies and Spelling

Nominees for school president should prepare a speech on Tuesday and be ready to present it on Wednesday and Thursday.

Mon.:  Write spelling words 4X each.  
Tues:  NO SCHOOL
Wed:  Spelling Quick Quiz; write missed words 10X each
Thurs:   Spelling Final Test
Fri:  Reading Comprehension Vocabulary test
In Social Studies, we'll begin a study of World War II. There will be a vocabulary quiz on Thursday.

The week of 11/1/10 we will begin reading Number the Stars. There will be nightly reading assignments and comprehension quizes over the book. This book is AR and will go toward helping your child meet his/her goal.

6th Math Vocabulary Lessons 47-50
Vocab. Quiz Wednesday, November 3

1.  Pi:  the number of diameters equal to the circumference of a circle
2.  Pictograph:  a method of displaying data that involves using pictures to represent the data being counted
3.  Circle Graph:  a method of displaying data often used to show information about percentages or parts of a whole
4.  Sector:  a region bordered by part of a circle and two radii
5.  Mean:  the number found when the sum of two or more numbers is divided by the number of addends in the sum
6.  Median:  the middle number of a list of data when the numbers are arranged in order from least to greatest
7.  Range:  the difference between the largest number and the smallest number in a list of data
8.  Mode:  the number or numbers that appear most often in a list of data
9.  Line Plot:  a method of plotting a set of numbers by placing a mark above a number on a number line each time it occurs in the set of data
10.  Stem and Leaf Plot:  a method of graphing a collection of numbers by placing the stem digit in one column and the leaf digits in another column
11.  Bimodal: having two modes

 A unit test will be given Friday over lessons 1-40. We will have a vocabulary test Thursday. A study guide will be sent home Monday.

Math Vocabulary Test Eleven
Your test will be Thursday and will include both matching and writing the definitions.

1) Pictograph- uses symbols (pictures) to compare data. They have a key that tells the quantity (amount) that is represented by each symbol in the graph.
2) Circle Graph- A graph that is divided into sections to represent portions of a data set. The sectors add up to 100%.
3) Qualitative- Expressed in or relating to categories rather than quantities of numbers.
4Quantitative- Expressed in or relating to quantities or numbers
5) Equivalent Fractions- Different fractions that name the same amount.
6) Reduce- To state a fraction in lowest terms.
7) Area- the number of square units needed to cover a surface. It is always answered in units squared.
8) Perimeter- The distance around a closed flat shape.
9) Length- The longer dimension of a rectangle
10) Width- The shorter dimension of a rectangle.
