6th newsletter week of December 3, 2012

Sixth Grade Newsletter
November 30, 2012
Christmas lunch is scheduled for Wed, Dec. 12th.  Guests are WELCOME to join us that day for the best deal in town. I’ll give you our lunch time for that day next week. It will probably be different from our normal lunch time.
Find next week’s assignments for sixth grade on the back. Students will also receive these assignments in their classes.
On Thursday, Dec. 6th will be the fifth graders’ E-Fair.  Please allow your sixth grader to shop for goodies, just like other students did for us last year. Most items will cost around $1.00.
Tomorrow is our Concession Stand sales day.  Please remember if you’ve signed up for a time slot.
Next Friday, Dec.7th is Parents’ Night Out, a fundraiser for the DC trip.  We need adults who will work that night, from 5pm-9pm, or any part of that. It takes a lot of hands! Please let us know if you will work that evening. It’s usually a very big funding night.
Winter Musical performance on Dec. 18th is at 9:30am and 1pm, during the school day. Students will be wearing Western outfits... jeans, plaid shirts, cowboy hats, etc.
Wednesday, Dec. 19th is the last day of school before our Winter Break. It is also the end of the 2nd nine weeks grading period. That morning will be our AR reward movie, and Holiday Parties will be that afternoon. If you would like to help with your student’s homeroom party at 1:30 that afternoon, please let Mrs. Davenport, ginger.dublin@graves.kyschools.us or me, anne.allen@graves.kyschools.us know. She and I will provide drinks, chips, candy canes and a snack- That will be our Christmas for the students. Thank you!!
We will have a class gift exchange for any students who wish to participate.  If your 6th grader wants to be a part of the class gift exchange, he/she should bring a $5 gift.  Boys should bring a boy’s gift, and girls should bring a girl’s gift.
Thank you for all you do for our sixth graders.

Students will complete a short answer question independently one day next week over algebra. We TEST OVER chapter 7 hopefully on Friday December 7th or Tuesday December 11 depending on student understanding of concepts. We will start chapter 8 on equations and inequalities the following week. Tuesday and Thursday will continue to be fact assessment days. On these days students will be asked to complete random facts they should know. Some of these grades will be recorded. Thursday December 6th, we have a vocabulary test. A study guide will be sent home Monday.
Math- McCord
In the sixth grade we are working very hard on some difficult information, however, you may be able to help your child more than you know.  Our chapter is over percents, which also involve interest, tax, and interest rates.  We have discussed some of the ways that people use this knowledge, but if you could take a minute to explain a receipt or bank statement to your child it will really bring our school work to life.  Thank you for all you do.

6th science - Science fair Thursday, December 13th. All sixth graders are required to participate.
Reading with Mrs. Diane
We will be reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis from now until Christmas break.  If students stay on track with class reading and homework assignments, we will have time to watch the movie as well.
 DARE
Students have been assigned an essay by the DARE officer who has been meeting with them over the last six weeks.  The essay is due on Dec. 7th. Students will have class time to complete it, if they stay on task in class time.
